Writing numbers in words

Turning a figure into words, "one thousand two hundred and fifty", is needed more often than you might think: writing cheques, drafting legal and financial documents, and filling in forms all call for it, because words cannot be altered as easily as digits. The conventions. Numbers are grouped in threes (thousands, millions, billions) and read group by group. Whether to include "and" (as in "two hundred and five") differs between British and American usage: British English uses it before the tens or units, American English often drops it. Why words beat digits on documents.
