What makes a card valuable

Rarity. Holo, secret, alternate-art and Enchanted cards are worth far more than commons of the same character. The chase cards in each set drive the top prices.
Set and edition. First edition beats unlimited, early sets beat reprints, and shadowless beats shadowed. The exact printing can swing the value from cents to hundreds.
Condition. Market prices assume Near Mint. A played, whitened or creased card is worth a fraction; a clean copy is worth full value.
Foil and finish. Foils, reverse holos and special finishes carry a premium over the plain version of the same card.
Demand. Tournament staples and iconic cards hold value; a rare card nobody wants is still cheap. Prices move with the meta and reprints.

Condition grading, simplified

Gem Mint (10)Flawless, professionally graded. The top of the market.
Mint / Near MintLooks unplayed, no visible wear. The standard for market prices.
Lightly PlayedMinor edge or surface wear. Sells at a modest discount.
Moderately PlayedNoticeable wear, scratches or whitening. Worth well below Near Mint.
Heavily Played / DamagedCreases, tears or water damage. Only the rarest cards hold value here.
Should you grade it? Grading by PSA, BGS or CGC can multiply the value of a high-end card in top condition, but it costs money and takes weeks, so it only pays for genuinely valuable cards. Check the live value in the tool for your game first, then decide. For selling, TCGplayer and eBay reach the most buyers, and eBay sold listings show what people actually paid.

What makes a card valuable?

Rarity, set and edition, condition, foil, and demand. First-edition holo rares and iconic chase cards in top condition are worth the most.

Should I get it graded?

Only for genuinely valuable cards in top condition; grading costs money and time. Check the live value first to decide.

Where should I sell?

TCGplayer and eBay for singles (eBay sold listings show real prices); a local store buylist for bulk. Check the value here first.
