The rules allow a device that has the feature as long as it is disabled in a way an official can see, which is what the external switch and the coloured band on models like the Tour V5 Shift are for. A unit whose slope lives in a menu, or cannot be turned off at all, is fine for casual golf and unusable in a competition.
Laser and GPS are different tools and the listings blur them. A laser measures to what you point it at and needs a steady hand. A GPS unit knows the course and gives you front, middle and back without aiming. The Garmin Approach Z82 is both, which is why it costs what it does. Decide which you actually want before shopping on price, because the cheap end of this page is all laser.
Stabilisation matters more than magnification. Almost everything here is 6x, and at that power a shaky hand is what stops you locking onto a flag at 200 yards, not the glass. The Nikon Coolshot Pro Stabilized exists for exactly this reason and is worth the premium if you have ever struggled to hold a pin.
The battery door and the eyecup are what fail. The optics and the laser are solid state and effectively permanent, but the door is a small hinged plastic part that gets levered open with cold hands, and the rubber eyecup perishes and tears. Both are cheap on some models and unobtainable on older ones, so look at the photos rather than the description.
Ask whether it locks on, not whether it works. Every one of these will show a number. The useful test is whether it confirms a lock on a flag, which is the vibration pulse on a Bushnell or the red ring on a Precision Pro. A unit that ranges the trees behind the green and reports it confidently is worse than no rangefinder.
A magnetic cart mount is a feature, not an accessory. Several models have magnets built into the housing so the unit sticks to the cart frame. It is genuinely useful and it is part of the product, so a listing mentioning it is not selling you a mount.
