Figures are in US dollars, taken from live eBay listings with shipping included.
Everyone says buy secondhand. Nobody says where it actually pays. We track the cheapest live eBay price for every model we follow and compare it against what that model cost new, so you can see which categories are worth the hassle and which are not. There is also a model by model table further down showing exactly how much value each one has lost.

Office chairs save the most at about 72% off new. PlayStation 5 save the least at about 33%. All 32 categories we can price honestly, ranked:

How this is worked out. For every model we track, we take the cheapest genuine listing on eBay right now and compare it against that model's new retail price. The number in the table is the median across all models in the category, not the best case, so one unusually cheap listing cannot flatter a whole category.
What "new" means here, honestly. For models still on sale, it is the current price. For older models it is what that model sold for new, because you often cannot buy one new at all any more. An iPhone 11 against $699 is a comparison with its launch price, not with something Apple still sells. That is the standard way depreciation is quoted and it is the number a used buyer actually wants, but it does mean the biggest savings naturally sit on the oldest models, so read the category median rather than the single best example.
We leave out anything with no meaningful new price at all. That is why you will not find retired LEGO, designer handbags or vintage cameras here: those often resell for more than they cost new, so a "saving" would be nonsense.
What the numbers actually tell you
The pattern is not about price, it is about how fast a thing stops being the newest thing. Office chairs top the table because an Aeron built in 2015 does the same job as one built this year, while offices dump them by the hundred. Phones and wearables fall hard for the opposite reason: a two-year-old flagship still works fine, but everyone wants the new one, so supply is enormous.
At the other end, Mac minis and MacBooks hold their value because Apple keeps supporting them for years and the secondhand demand is as strong as the new demand. A 35% saving on a Mac mini is still real money, it is just not the 70% you get on a phone.
The practical read: if a category sits above roughly 55%, buying used is usually worth the effort. Below about 40%, you are taking on someone else's wear and losing the warranty to save a third, which is a fair trade only if you know what you are looking at.

Are these prices for working items?
They are the cheapest genuine listings we can find for each model, filtered to exclude obvious parts-only and faulty listings. Always read the condition notes on the listing itself before buying.
Why does the same model show different savings over time?
Because it is a live price, not a fixed one. Used prices move with supply, and a category can swing several points in a week when a lot of stock lands at once.
Is the new price today's price or the launch price?
Both, depending on the model. If it is still sold new, that is the current price. If it is discontinued, it is what the model cost new when you could buy one. So a saving on an older model is really depreciation since launch, which is why the oldest models show the biggest numbers.
Does a bigger saving mean a better buy?
No. A big saving often means the category depreciates fast, which is also true of the one you buy. It tells you where secondhand is worth the effort, not which product is good.
