How to buy a used games console

Disc or digital, and check what is in the box. Decide up front whether you want a disc drive: the digital editions of the PS5 and Xbox Series are cheaper but cannot play or resell physical games. Then confirm the listing includes the right controller(s) and all cables, because buying those separately adds up fast. A console "with 2 controllers and 5 games" can be better value than a bare unit.

Test the parts that fail. On a Nintendo Switch, the number-one issue is Joy-Con drift (the stick registering movement when untouched), so ask the seller to confirm the sticks are true, and factor a cheap replacement if not. On disc consoles, check the drive actually reads a game. On all of them, listen for loud fans and check the ports and HDMI output.

Which to buy used. The best value is usually the outgoing generation just after a new one launches, or a lightly-used current console from someone upgrading. Refurbished units from a reputable seller add a short warranty for a small premium, which is worth it on a machine with moving parts.

Storage. Modern consoles fill up fast; check whether an expansion card or SSD is included, as official storage is expensive to add later.

Which console holds its value

Each console as a percentage of what it costs new, which for anything still on sale is today's price rather than the one it launched at. Consoles behave unlike anything else on this site: they are sold cheap on purpose and make their money elsewhere, so they start with less margin to lose, and the genuinely old ones can go back up once collectors get involved. Two of them went UP new in 2026, the Switch 2 and the Steam Deck OLED, which pushes their used prices further below new without anything about the used market changing. Under each model is the actual listing that price came from, so you can see whether it is the thing you want or a bundle, a variant, or an accessory that happens to share the name.

"Off retail" compares today's used price with what the model costs new. For anything still on sale that is its current new price, so the figure is close to a discount you could really get. For anything no longer sold it is the last new price we have on record: on a boxed product like a LEGO set or a console that is the RRP, and on a part like a graphics card it is nearer what new stock was going for at the end than what it cost at launch. So on older hardware read it as depreciation against late retail rather than against the original sticker. A few rows read "above" instead: they cost more used than new, which is normal for a retired set or a part nobody makes any more.
