How we rank. By cost per GB of RAM (monthly price ÷ RAM), because RAM is usually what runs out first when self-hosting. That spreads the paid plans over ten times, from HostHatch at about $0.61 a GB to the dearest unmanaged plan near $6. Contabo is next at roughly $0.75 and Hetzner is about $1.23, which buys faster NVMe disks and better CPU for the difference. Sort by the first column to see the order for yourself, and note that HostHatch's figure is a year paid up front rather than a monthly rate. The honest catch other comparisons skip: Contabo oversells its hardware, so CPU and disk I/O are slower and less consistent, great for storage-heavy or non-critical use, less so for bursty apps. US providers (DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode) cost far more per GB but add polished dashboards, managed services, US regions and support. What's the cheapest VPS?
By $/GB RAM, Contabo and Hetzner, often 5-7× cheaper per GB than US providers. Contabo is lowest per GB; Hetzner is close but adds NVMe and better CPU.
Is Contabo good?
Most RAM and storage per dollar, but it oversells hardware so CPU varies and disk I/O is slow vs Hetzner. Fine for storage-heavy or non-critical workloads; bursty/I/O-heavy apps will feel it.
Hetzner vs DigitalOcean?
Hetzner is 3-5× cheaper compute with faster NVMe and more bandwidth. DigitalOcean costs more but adds a polished dashboard, managed databases, US regions and stronger support.
What's $/GB RAM?
Monthly price ÷ RAM in GB, it normalises different plan sizes. RAM is usually the binding constraint for self-hosting, so it's the most useful single VPS value metric.
