Pick a pedal and see the lowest current prices on eBay, where the used market is national rather than local because a pedal posts for the price of a padded envelope. Prices are pulled live, so what you see is what sellers are asking this minute.

Browse the full range of guitar pedals on eBay → Prices move fast. See the biggest price drops across every category this week →The revision decides the price more than the condition does. Boss pedals made in Japan before roughly 1990, early Electro-Harmonix Big Muffs and original Ibanez TS808s trade at a large multiple of the current version, and they look almost identical in a photograph. The serial number and the country of manufacture printed on the base are what settle it, so ask for a photo of the underside rather than the top.
Footswitches and jacks are the parts that fail. Everything else in a pedal is solid state and lasts effectively forever, but the switch is a mechanical part that gets stamped on and the jacks work loose. Both are repairable and neither is expensive, but a dead switch on a boutique pedal is a soldering job, not a swap, so price it in.
Most pedals arrive without a power supply, and they are not interchangeable. The common standard is 9V centre-negative, which a daisy chain covers, but plenty of pedals want 12V or 18V, and some digital ones draw more current than a cheap supply provides. A pedal that behaves oddly on a shared supply is usually starved rather than faulty.
Buy the version you will actually use, not the one with the most controls. The multi-effect units on this page do everything, and the single-purpose stompboxes do one thing without a menu. Both are legitimate answers, and the deciding question is whether you want to edit sounds at home or step on something at a gig.
Boxed and papered matters more here than in most categories. Pedals are small, they get resold often, and the box tends to survive because it is the size of a paperback. An original box adds real money at resale and costs nothing to keep.
Watch for modified pedals. A "modded" pedal has had components changed by someone whose work you cannot inspect. Some mods are well known and add value; most narrow the market when you come to sell. Unless the modifier is a name you recognise, treat a mod as a discount rather than a feature.
Live eBay listings. Pick a pedal and it fetches the current lowest-priced listings in real time, with the listing shown beside each price, so nothing here is an estimate.
Almost always the revision. A Japanese-made Boss from the 1980s or an original TS808 sells for several times the current production version, and the two look nearly identical in photos. Check the country of manufacture on the base.
Usually not. Most pedals are sold as the pedal alone, and the listings that do include one say so in the title. Assume you need your own 9V centre-negative supply unless told otherwise, and check the voltage, because some want 12V or 18V.
The footswitch and the input jacks, in that order. The electronics are solid state and effectively permanent. Both faults are repairable, but they are soldering jobs rather than swaps, so factor that in on an expensive pedal.
Only at a discount, unless the person who modified it is someone you have heard of. A mod you cannot inspect narrows the market when you come to resell, even when it sounds good.
A multi-effects unit does everything and puts it behind a menu. Individual pedals do one thing each and you change them with your foot. The question is whether you spend more time editing sounds at home or playing in front of people.
More than in most categories, because pedals are small and get resold often, so a surviving box is common enough that buyers expect it. It adds real money at resale and costs nothing to keep.
