Live from eBayCheck the software licence before the hardware. This is the trap that costs the most money and it has no equivalent on other gear. A controller's rekordbox or Serato unlock is tied to the hardware, not the seller's account, so it should come with the unit, but some models only unlock the entry tier and need a paid upgrade before they do what you expect. Ask the seller which software the unit unlocks and at what level, and price that in. A cheap controller that needs a licence upgrade is not cheap.
Faders and the crossfader are the wear items. They are the parts that get used thousands of times a night, so ask for confirmation that every channel fader travels smoothly with no crackle or dead spot, and that the crossfader cuts cleanly at both ends. Worn faders are replaceable on most models and the part is not expensive, but it is a job, and a seller who has not noticed the problem may not have noticed others.
Jog wheels, jacks and the sound card. Confirm the jogs respond evenly across the platter with no dead zones, and that touch sensitivity works if the model has it. Then check the outputs: most controllers have a built-in sound card, and a channel that passes no audio usually means a board fault rather than a cable. Test video showing all four channels is worth more than any description.
What a bundle is actually worth. Listings often include a flight case or a laptop stand, and those genuinely add value, but they also inflate the asking price above what the controller alone is worth. Our table shows the cheapest genuine unit so you can see what you are paying for the extras.
