The Disc edition is the pick for most buyers because it plays physical games, which you can buy cheaply used, borrow, resell or trade in, and it doubles as a 4K Blu-ray player. The Digital edition is cheaper up front but download-only, so every game comes from the PlayStation Store at full digital price, which often costs more over time than the disc saving. The Pro is the powerful option for 4K gaming and is digital-only unless you add the separate disc drive. Decide how you buy games before you shop.
Test the disc drive, HDMI and fan. The three things that actually go wrong are the disc drive not reading or ejecting, the HDMI port failing (no picture), and a noisy fan or coil whine from a hard-used unit. Ask the seller to confirm all three, ideally in a short video showing a disc loading and a game running. A console that has been stood in a dusty, enclosed space and run hot for years is the one to avoid.
Reset, account and what is in the box. The PS5 must be factory reset and deactivated from the previous owner's account so your library and saves work cleanly. Check that a DualSense controller is included and its sticks do not drift, and that the power cable and HDMI lead are there. Bundles with extra controllers or games can be good value, but price the console alone first so you know what you are really paying for the extras.
Value. Used PS5 prices have steadied with plenty of stock, so a clean Disc edition at 15-35% below retail is solid value; the Digital is cheaper only if you truly never buy physical games, and the Pro is worth the premium mainly for 4K enthusiasts.
