How to buy used safely. The number that matters is the total including shipping, which we add up for you. Then check the seller's feedback (shown on every listing) and whether returns are accepted, favour listings with photos of the actual kit and detailed condition notes, and remember eBay's Money Back Guarantee covers you if it arrives faulty or not as described. Inspect the neck, body, frets, and electronics before finalizing purchase. Prices refresh live from eBay and are cached briefly, so they are current to within a few minutes.

How to buy a used electronic drum kit

Mesh heads or rubber pads decides how it feels, and it is the difference you notice first. Mesh is tensioned fabric and rebounds like a real head, quietly. Rubber is louder to the room, harder on the wrists over a long session, and much cheaper. Almost every kit worth owning secondhand now has mesh, and a rubber-pad kit should be priced accordingly rather than sold as an equivalent.

The module is the instrument, and most of the money. The pads are triggers; the box on the rack holds the sounds, the inputs and the resale value. A kit is worth roughly what its module is worth, which is why the same pads turn up under a cheap module and an expensive one at very different prices. Check which module a listing actually has rather than trusting the kit name, because sellers mix and match.

Ask how the hi-hat works. A pad on the rack and a pedal that only opens and closes in two states plays nothing like a real hi-hat on its own stand with continuous positions. This is the single biggest playability gap between an entry kit and a mid one, and it is almost never mentioned in a listing.

Find out whether the pedal is included. Some kits trigger the low end from a beater pad with no pedal at all, and others need a normal pedal you supply. Two listings at the same price can differ by a hundred dollars once you buy the missing piece.

Count the cables and the clamps. These are sold in pieces and reassembled, and what goes missing is the loom, the rack clamps and the power supply. None of it is expensive individually and all of it is annoying to source. Ask for a photo of the rack assembled and powered on.

Quiet is relative. Mesh pads are quiet to the room but the low pedal thumps through a floor, so downstairs neighbours hear it whatever the headphones say. A riser or an isolation mat is worth budgeting for at the same time.

Value. Roland modules hold their money for years and the pads wear out around them, so a tired-looking Roland with a good module is often the better buy. Entry kits from the volume brands lose most of their value immediately, which is the argument for buying those secondhand rather than new, and the biggest discounts on this page are on exactly those.

Common questions

Where are these prices from?

Live eBay listings. Pick a model and it fetches the current lowest-priced listings in real time, with the listing shown next to each price.

Mesh or rubber pads?

Mesh is tensioned fabric, rebounds like a real head and is quieter to the room. Rubber is cheaper and harder on the wrists over a long session. Most kits worth buying used now have mesh, so a rubber-pad kit should be priced below one, not level with it.

Why do two kits with the same pads cost so differently?

The module. The pads are just triggers, and the box on the rack holds the sounds, the inputs and most of the resale value. Sellers mix and match, so check which module a listing actually has rather than trusting the kit name.

What goes missing when these are sold used?

The cable loom, the rack clamps and the power supply, because these are dismantled to move and reassembled by someone else. Individually cheap, collectively annoying. Ask for a photo of the rack assembled and powered on.

Are they actually quiet enough for a flat?

Quiet to the room, yes, with mesh pads and headphones. The pedal still thumps through the floor and downstairs neighbours hear that, so budget for a riser or an isolation mat at the same time as the kit.
