How to buy a used studio microphone

XLR versus USB: know what you need. XLR microphones like the Shure SM7B and Rode NT1 need an audio interface or mixer to connect to a computer, but they offer professional audio quality and are the industry standard for podcasting and recording studios. USB microphones like the Blue Yeti and Elgato Wave plug straight into a computer without extra gear, making them convenient for streaming and casual recording, but they cap out at consumer quality levels.

Dynamic versus condenser: how the mic hears. Dynamic microphones like the Shure SM58 and Rode PodMic reject background noise and room reflections, so they work well in untreated spaces and loud environments. Condenser microphones like the Audio-Technica AT2020 and Rode NT1 are more sensitive and capture finer detail, but they pick up more room hum and noise, so they need a quieter space. Both types have their place depending on your setup.

Test that it works and check the bundle. Ask the seller to confirm the microphone powers on, works without crackle or intermittent signal, and that all cables are included. Check whether the shock mount, desk stand clip and XLR cable come with it, since buying these separately adds to the cost. Dynamic microphones like the SM7B output at low levels, so many podcasters add an inline preamp booster to get a stronger signal without adding noise.

"Off retail" compares today's used price with what the model costs new. For anything still on sale that is its current new price, so the figure is close to a discount you could really get. For anything no longer sold it is the last new price we have on record: on a boxed product like a LEGO set or a console that is the RRP, and on a part like a graphics card it is nearer what new stock was going for at the end than what it cost at launch. So on older hardware read it as depreciation against late retail rather than against the original sticker. A few rows read "above" instead: they cost more used than new, which is normal for a retired set or a part nobody makes any more.
