Ask the seller to confirm it has been removed from their account. This is the one that turns a bargain into a paperweight. Arlo, Ring, Nest, eufy and Wyze all bind a camera to the account that set it up, and a unit the previous owner never deleted cannot be added to yours. It is not a reset you can do from the button. Ask for a photo of the app with the device removed, or at least a plain statement that they have done it. Then check whether the model still gets app and firmware support, because a discontinued camera whose app has been retired is a lens with no software, and ask whether the base station is included on any Arlo or eufy system, since the cameras alone will not work without one.

How to buy a used security camera

The account lock is the whole risk. Every one of these brands ties a camera to the first account that claims it, and only that account can release it. A seller who has lost interest, lost the login, or simply forgotten leaves you with hardware you cannot register. There is no workaround worth trying and support will not help a second owner. One question up front avoids the entire problem: has this been removed from your app?

The subscription is most of what these cost. The camera is the cheap part. Cloud recording runs a few dollars a month per camera and more for a plan covering several, and over three years that dwarfs what you paid for the hardware. Before buying, find out what the model does with no plan at all: some keep local recording to a card or a base station, some fall back to live view and nothing else. That single answer decides whether a used camera is thrifty or a subscription trap you bought secondhand.

Battery, wired or plug-in changes what you are buying. Battery cameras go anywhere and need charging every few months, and a battery several years old will not hold what the listing claims. Wired-in floodlight and doorbell models never need charging but need a spare cable or existing wiring, and are the ones most likely to arrive with the mounting plate missing. Plug-in indoor cameras are the cheapest and the least likely to disappoint.

Check the model is still supported before the price. These are cloud products, and a manufacturer retiring an app or an API can turn a working camera into scrap without touching it. Look for the model on the maker's current support page. Anything from a brand that has exited the market is worth buying only if it records locally and you are content to run it that way.

Base stations and hubs are sold separately, and often missing. Arlo Pro and Ultra systems, eufyCam kits and UniFi Protect setups all need the hub, and add-on cameras are listed at prices that look like bargains precisely because they are cameras only. Read the title carefully: "add-on" means the seller kept the part that makes it work.

Value. Cameras depreciate fast, because the market pushes a new model every year and the old one still does the same job. That is what makes this a good category to buy used, as long as the account is clear and the app is alive, which are the two things the price does not tell you.

Common questions

Where do these prices come from?

Live eBay listings. Pick a model and it fetches the current lowest-priced listings in real time, with the listing shown next to each price, so nothing here is an estimate.

What is the single most important question to ask?

Whether the camera has been removed from the seller's account. Arlo, Ring, Nest, eufy and Wyze all bind a device to the account that registered it, and only that account can release it. A camera the previous owner never deleted cannot be added to yours, and there is no reset that fixes it.

Do I have to pay a subscription?

It depends on the model and it is worth checking before you buy, because the plan usually costs more over three years than the camera did. Some models record locally to a card or a base station with no plan at all. Others drop to live view only, which for most people is not a security camera.

Is a used battery camera a bad idea?

Not automatically, but treat the stated battery life as the figure it had when new. Cells several years old hold noticeably less, and a replacement is often not user-serviceable. If the listing shows a recent charge date or a battery health reading, that is worth more than the model year.

What is an add-on camera?

A camera sold without the base station or hub it needs. Arlo and eufy systems both work this way, and add-on units list far cheaper for that reason. If you already own the hub it is the best value on this page. If you do not, it will not switch on.

Which brands hold their value?

None of them especially, which is the point. The market pushes a new model every year and last year's camera does the same job, so depreciation is steep and steady. That makes this a good category to buy used and a poor one to buy new and resell.
