How to buy a used drone (what to check)

Batteries are the hidden cost. Drone flight batteries are lithium-polymer and wear with charge cycles; a swollen or puffy battery is dangerous and must be retired. Ask how many batteries are included and roughly how many cycles they have, because genuine DJI spares are expensive. A drone bundled with two or three healthy batteries is worth far more than a bare one.

Check it has not been crashed. Look closely at the gimbal (the camera should sit level and move smoothly, not droop or judder), the arms and shell for cracks or glue, and the propellers for chips. Ask whether it powers up, calibrates and holds a stable hover. A gimbal damaged in a crash is costly to repair.

Match the model to the rules and the use. Sub-250g models like the DJI Mini avoid much of the registration burden in many countries and are ideal for travel; the Air and Mavic lines trade portability for a bigger sensor and range. Check your local drone registration and no-fly rules before buying, whatever the model.

Value. DJI drones hold value well, so used prices sit relatively high, but a clean used unit with spare batteries still undercuts new meaningfully and is a sensible buy once you have checked the gimbal and cells.

"Off retail" compares today's used price with what the model costs new. For anything still on sale that is its current new price, so the figure is close to a discount you could really get. For anything no longer sold it is the last new price we have on record: on a boxed product like a LEGO set or a console that is the RRP, and on a part like a graphics card it is nearer what new stock was going for at the end than what it cost at launch. So on older hardware read it as depreciation against late retail rather than against the original sticker. A few rows read "above" instead: they cost more used than new, which is normal for a retired set or a part nobody makes any more.
