How to buy used safely. The number that matters is the total including shipping, which we add up for you. Then check the seller's feedback (shown on every listing), whether returns are accepted, and whether the device is deregistered from a previous account. Favour listings with photos of the actual device and a note that it powers on and the display has no burn-in. Remember eBay's Money Back Guarantee covers you if it arrives faulty or not as described. Prices refresh live from eBay and are cached briefly, so they are current to within a few minutes.

How to buy a used Kindle

Check the screen and that it is deregistered. E-ink screens can crack internally even when the glass looks fine, showing as lines, blots or a frozen section, so ask for a photo of the screen switched on and displaying a page. Just as important, the Kindle must be deregistered from the previous owner's Amazon account, or you cannot add your own; ask them to remove it from their devices list.

Which model, and mind the ads. Older Kindles still read perfectly, so a couple of generations back is fine unless you want a specific feature. Decide whether you want a front light (Paperwhite and up) and waterproofing, which only the higher models have. Many Kindles were sold as cheaper "with special offers" versions that show ads on the lock screen; these can usually be removed for a small fee, worth knowing before you buy.

Battery and buttons. E-readers sip power and the battery lasts for years, but a very old unit may need charging often, so ask. Confirm the charging port works and the touchscreen responds across the whole screen. A worn case or scuffs are cosmetic and cheap to cover.

Value. Kindles hold up for years, so a supported Paperwhite a generation or two old is excellent value against new.

Common questions

Where are these prices from?

Live eBay listings, the largest source of used and refurbished Kindle readers. Pick a model and it fetches the current lowest-priced listings in real time.

Is it safe to buy a used Kindle?

Yes, mostly. Favour high-feedback sellers, check that the e-ink display works with no burn-in, verify the device powers on and charges, and lean on eBay's Money Back Guarantee.

How much cheaper is used vs new?

Usually 25-50% below new. Current models hold value well; older generations drop sharply once new ones launch.

What should I check first?

Total price with shipping, seller feedback and sales count, returns policy, whether the device is deregistered, screen condition, battery life, and whether the charger is included. Real photos matter.

Can I use a used Kindle without the original charger?

Yes. All recent Kindles use standard USB-C charging and come with a cable. Older Paperwhite and basic models use micro-USB. Any compatible cable works fine. Original chargers are nice but not required unless the listing explicitly says the cable is included.

Cheapest by model, at a glance

A daily snapshot of the lowest genuine eBay price for every model we track, and how good that price is right now versus its usual level, updated automatically. Prices last refreshed 7 August 2026 . Tap a price to see that model's cheapest listings on eBay, or tap a model name for the full live list here.

Under each model is the actual listing that price came from, so you can see whether it is the thing you want or a bundle, a variant, or an accessory that happens to share the name.

"Off retail" compares today's used price with what the model cost new. For models still on sale that is the current price; for discontinued ones it is the launch price, so it shows how far the model has depreciated rather than a discount you could get on a new one.
