How to buy a used coffee grinder

Make sure it is a burr grinder, not a blade grinder. Blade grinders chop beans unevenly, which ruins the brew. Burr grinders (conical or flat) grind consistently. Ask which type it is or check the photos carefully. If the listing shows only a hopper and motor, it is not a grinder.

Check the burrs for wear and damage. Worn or chipped burrs produce uneven grinds. If the burrs look notched or dull in photos, the grind quality will be poor. Ask whether replacement burrs are available. Some brands like Baratza sell affordable replacement burr sets; others are harder to source.

Confirm the motor runs smoothly. Power on the grinder without beans in the hopper (check if the seller has tested this). The motor should spin freely without loud grinding, squeaking, or bogging down. If it grinds loudly or jams, the burrs are likely damaged. Test spinning for a few seconds; listen for grinding or motor noise.

Grind fineness matters by brew method. Hand grinders and entry grinders like the Encore work for pour-over and drip coffee. For espresso, you need a grinder that adjusts fine enough: the Sette 270, DF64, Eureka Mignon, or Niche Zero have fine adjustments. If the seller is vague about grind range, ask directly or compare to your brew method.

So on older hardware read it as depreciation against late retail rather than against the original sticker.
