A replacement stylus is inexpensive on common cartridges, so factor it in rather than assuming the fitted one is good. Check the cartridge is a known brand, not a no-name.
Check the motor, speed and tonearm. Confirm the platter spins at a steady 33 and 45 rpm (belt-drive decks may just need a new belt, a cheap fix), the tonearm moves freely and cues smoothly, and there is no loud hum or rumble through the speakers.
