Processors are one of the safest used buys. A CPU has no moving parts and rarely wears out, so a used chip that works on arrival will almost certainly keep working. The main risk is compatibility, not reliability: confirm the exact socket (such as AM4, AM5 or LGA1700) and that your motherboard's chipset and BIOS support that specific model before buying.
Inspect the pins and mind the packaging. On AMD chips the pins are on the processor, so check close-up photos for bent or missing pins, which are a dealbreaker. On modern Intel the pins are in the socket instead, so the chip itself is safer. Avoid vague "engineering sample" or "ES/QS" listings, which are pre-release chips that can be locked or unstable.
Generational value. The best value sits one or two generations back, where a former flagship now sells for a fraction of its launch price yet still outperforms current budget chips. Work out the real-world performance you need rather than chasing the newest generation, and check whether a cooler is included, as many used chips are sold bare.
Value. Used CPUs typically sell 40-60% below launch price for the same performance, making a last-gen chip one of the best-value PC upgrades going.

Very safe. CPUs have no moving parts and rarely fail. Buy from high-feedback sellers, verify the socket type, and make sure the listing says the processor has been tested and works. eBay's Money Back Guarantee covers you if it doesn't boot.
Usually 30-50% below retail, more if it is an older generation. Older flagships often have the best value because they drop faster in price but still have plenty of performance.
Check your motherboard's manual or specs: modern AMD boards are AM5 (2022+), modern Intel are LGA1700 (2022+). Older boards use AM4 or LGA1150. The eBay listing will state the socket; make sure it matches.
Total price including shipping, the seller's feedback percentage and years selling, the socket type (AM5, LGA1700, etc. must match your motherboard), whether the CPU has been tested, and the stated condition. Check if the original box and cooler are included. Avoid listings for coolers sold separately or bent-pin repairs.
