How to buy a used luxury watch safely

Authenticity first, everything else second. Fakes are sophisticated, so favour sellers with long histories and many watch sales, and insist on real photos of the actual watch including the movement where possible. Check the serial and reference numbers, the weight (fakes often feel light), the smoothness of the seconds hand, and the crispness of the dial printing and date magnification. For anything over eBay's threshold, use the Authenticity Guarantee, which has a watchmaker inspect the piece before it reaches you.

Box and papers are real money. A watch that comes with its original box, warranty card and receipt ("full set") sells for meaningfully more than the head alone, and is easier to resell later. Missing papers are not a dealbreaker on an otherwise genuine watch, but they should be reflected in a lower price.

Service history matters. Mechanical watches need servicing every 5-10 years, and a full service can run several hundred dollars or more on a luxury piece. A recent service receipt adds value and peace of mind; an unknown service history on an old watch means you should budget for one.

Which watches hold value. Steel sports models from Rolex, Omega, Tudor and a handful of others hold or gain value best because demand outstrips supply, while dressier and quartz pieces depreciate more. Buying pre-owned side-steps the waitlists and the steepest first-owner depreciation, so a serviced used watch is often the smart way in.
