An espresso machine that was run on hard water without descaling can have a furred-up boiler and blocked valves. Ask whether it was descaled regularly and where the owner lived (hard-water areas are tougher on machines). A quick descale is easy; a seized boiler is not, so factor it into the price of an older machine.
Test that it actually pulls a shot. Ask the seller to confirm it powers on, heats up, pumps water through the group head and steams milk. Listen for the pump; a machine that heats but will not pump has a problem. Check the portafilter and basket are included (they are fiddly to source separately) and that the group-head seal is not perished.
Match the machine to your effort level. A pod machine is grab-and-go; a semi-automatic with a portafilter makes far better coffee but needs a decent grinder and some practice. If buying a semi-auto, remember the grinder is half the setup, so budget for one if it is not included.
Value. Quality machines from the likes of Gaggia, Rancilio and Breville last for years and are cheap to service, so a well-kept used one is often far better value than a new budget machine.

The portafilter is the metal handle and filter basket that holds the ground coffee and attaches to the espresso machine to extract shots. The basket is the metal cup inside that holds the grounds. They are essential parts of every espresso machine, not upgrades or accessories, and every working machine has them included.

"Off retail" compares today's used price with what the model costs new. For anything still on sale that is its current new price, so the figure is close to a discount you could really get. For anything no longer sold it is the last new price we have on record: on a boxed product like a LEGO set or a console that is the RRP, and on a part like a graphics card it is nearer what new stock was going for at the end than what it cost at launch. So on older hardware read it as depreciation against late retail rather than against the original sticker. A few rows read "above" instead: they cost more used than new, which is normal for a retired set or a part nobody makes any more.
